Travel with CAS to one of the top birding locations in all of North America: Cape May, New Jersey, located in the very heart of the Atlantic Flyway. This trip is sure to appeal to both avid & novice birders alike, as it is timed to catch all the birding action of the fall migration along the Eastern Seaboard.
Cape May’s location makes it a special birding hot spot. It is positioned on the southernmost tip of New Jersey, and is situated exactly where birds that are migrating from points north “drop out” before crossing the Delaware Bay. Warblers, raptors, and waterfowl all abound here during the month of September, as do a myriad of shorebirds.
As you can see from the itinerary, the trip will cover sites that are well known for quality birding. There also will be a group “Pizza in the Park” dinner the first night where we can get to know each other better and get updates on the trip. Participants should find and make their own lodging arrangements. The are many options in and around Cape May to fit a range of budgets. - Background: Michaux State Forest staff asked CAS to help monitor birds at several specific sites on the Michaux. This is one of two field trips to show participants where the sites are and to explain the monitoring protocols. Expect to see late fall migrants and winter residents.The map below shows where the sites are. On this trip, you will visit some, but not all sites. The Part 2 trip will complete the tour.
- Meet at Mont Alto State Park parking lot on Rt 233 (across from pavilion).
- Bring binoculars, snack, and sturdy walking shoes. Expect an easy approx. 3-mile walk.

- Christmas Bird Count in Franklin/Fulton Counties: Buchanan Trail CBC

- We’ve scheduled this year’s Christmas Bird Count for Saturday, December 17, 2022. Again, in this year of COVID-19, things will be a little different. To be safe, participants should count only with folks who are not ill and have not been exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus, and should consider wearing masks. If the number of COVID-19 cases spikes dramatically in the weeks leading up to the count, we may cancel it, so please check back here, with your zone captain, or the compiler (Valerie Barnes).
- If you don’t feel comfortable going out, please let your zone captain know well in advance.
- If you live inside our circle, you may want to switch to counting at your feeders this year. See the map below for a view of our circle. If you can’t tell whether you are inside the circle or not, please contact the compiler, Valerie Barnes, or look at the more detailed map. To count at your feeders, please sign up well in advance with Marguerite Fries.
- We will not hold the tally dinner. The compiler will connect with the zone captains to record the results. Results will be posted on our Observation Records page.
- Contact: Valerie Barnes to sign up to count (if you didn’t count last year). Your zone captain should contact you if you counted last year. If you are new to the count, Val will assign you to a zone and the zone captain will contact you.
