What To Do If You Find an Injured Bird

First, try to determine if the bird really does need medical attention. Often a bird may fly into a window and be simply stunned. Waiting may reveal that the injury was temporary and that the bird can fly away. Baby birds sometimes seem helpless if they have just left the nest. Waiting may reveal that the bird can fly or that the parent is nearby and will help.

Note that the number of people qualified to rehabilitate wildlife is limited. Rehabilitators sometimes specialize in particular kinds of animals, so consider that. Rehabilitators are usually volunteers with limited resources and would appreciate any donation to help offset their expenses. Some veterinarians are also willing to help injured wild animals.

The website lists PA Wildlife Rehabilitators by County. Pay attention to the kinds of animals the rehabilitator cares for.

Wildlife In Need Emergency Response of Pennsylvania

https://winemergencyresponse.com/

WIN is an all-volunteer network for capturing and delivering injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The site says clearly that “WIN CANNOT transport animals we have not captured/contained.”

Under “Animals” on the website, there are useful tips for what to do if you find an animal in trouble.

The website lists county contacts. Unfortunately, as of March 9, 2022 for Franklin County, it says:

“We are unable to service this county until volunteers join our organization. Consider volunteering, and suggesting this to a friend who may be interested. Visit our website: https://winemergencyresponse.com under volunteer opportunities. Contact the closest wildlife rehabilitation center which can be located at www.PAWR.com or the Pennsylvania Game Commission at 814-643-1831.”
